Ridolfo Luigi Boccherini - Guitar Quintet, G. 451

Ridolfo Luigi Boccherini (1743-1805) was an Italian composer and cellist. His contemporaries considered his music to be a counterpart to Haydn's, going so far as to call him "Haydn's wife" due to its gentleness (Grove Music Online).

This recording is performed by the Soloists of the Massy Opera Orchestra: Pedro Ibañez, Danuta Glowacka-Pitet, Haïk Davtian, Ghislaine Rouits, and Emmanuelle Cohen.

Sergey Vasil'yevich Rachmaninov's "Cello Sonata, Op. 19"

Sergey Vasil'yevich Rachmaninov (1873-1943) was a Russian composer and pianist. As in many of his compositions, in the Cello Sonata, the piano accompaniment echoes the melodic line and plays as significant part as the cello.

Giuseppe Torelli's "Trumpet Concerto in D major, G.28"

Giuseppe Torelli (1658-1709) was an Italian composer and violinist. While he began his career composing chamber music, he turned to concertos and in fact advanced the concerto as a genre. This concerto, written around 1701 as one of the first of several trumpet-oboe pieces, remained unpublished until after his death.

Gabriel Faure's "Sonata for Piano and Cello No. 1, op.109"

 
Gabriel Faure (1845-1924) was a French composer. His music serves as a bridge between Romanticism, an era in full bloom when he was born, and twentieth-century music. Faure wrote this cello sonata during World War I. Like many of his compositions from that era, the music of this sonata is quite forceful.

Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750) was a German composer and organist.

Bach wrote the Brandenburg Concertos over a period of several years and compiled them for the Margrave of Brandenburg in 1721. The Concertos show Bach veering from the standard concerto grosso and featuring solo instruments instead. The Concerto No. 2 is likely Bach's last orchestral work.

Antonin Dvorak (1841-1904) was a Czech composer and is considered one of the greatest Czech composers of the nineteenth-century. The Serenade for Strings displays a different mood in each of the movements: a cantabile style in the first, a melancholy waltz in the second, humorous high spirits in the third, lyrical beauty in the fourth, and exuberance in the fifth.

Free Download: Johannes Brahms' "9 Lieder und Gesange, Op. 32"

Johannes Brahms (1833-1897) is a German composer and pianist whose music influenced many twentieth-century composers. This song cycle is a setting of poems by August von Platen and Georg Friedrich Daumer. Brahms chose poems that would be improved by adding music to them, which means that he did not always choose the best poetry to set. With these songs, Brahams employed an operatic style that signaled a shift into his mature compositions.

Free Download: Antonio Vivaldi's "Mandolin Concerto, RV 425"

Antonio Vivaldi (1678-1741) was an Italian composer of the Baroque era. He trained to be a local priest in Venice, and like his father, he played the violin in his youth. He principally traveled and composed in Italy; his operas and concertos advanced Italian music.

Vivaldi wrote over 500 pieces of orchestral music, including some 350 concertos. The sheer volume of concertos allowed him plenty of room for experimentation. He developed the ritornello, a three-movement concerto in which the final movement was a shorter variation of the first, as occurs in the Mandolin Concerto.

Free Download: Benjamin Britten's "Missa Brevis, Op. 63"

Benjamin Britten (1913-1976) is a twentieth-century British composer and pianist. Encouraged by his mother, he began playing and composing at an early age. He rose to great prominence as composer of operas and had the opportunity to collaborate with great names of the twentieth century, such as with EM Forester on Billy Budd.

The Missa Brevis was written for the Westminter Cathedral Choir on the retirement of the choirmaster, George Malcolm. The mass is true to its origins: it does not have a Credo, traditional in Catholic masses, as it was written for an Episcopal mass.
