Sergey Rachmaninov (1873-1943) is a late Romantic Russian composer and pianist. He studied piano at the Moscow Conservatory in his youth and began composing while there as well. He loved nature and did most of his composing at Ivanovka, his country estate. He lived in both Russia and Germany to avoid political upset between 1903 and 1917.
The Cello Sonata was completed soon after Rachmaninov graduated from the Conservatory. It demonstrates his growing ability to balance the voice of a single instrument like the cello with that of the accompaniment of the piano.
