The dance 'Mambo' appears in the neighborhood dance scene in Act I of Bernstein's West Side Story. Preceding the famous song 'Maria', members of the rival gangs perform this 'challenge dance' during which Tony and Maria meet and fall in love.
Bernstein composed a symphonic suite of orchestral music from the show in 1957; 'Mambo (Meno Presto)' is the 4th movement in the suite.
This recording is performed by the Carlos Chavez Symphony Orchestra; Fernando Lozano, conductor.
