Despite the title, Lalo's most famous work, the Symphonie espagnole is not a symphony but a violin concerto. First performed by the great violinist Pablo Sarasate in 1875, its blend of Spanish-inspired themes and technical virtuosity have ensured it a permanent place in the violin repertory. The joyous finale has become particularly well-loved.
This recording is performed by the Orchestre National Bordeaux Aquitaine; Alain Lombard, conductor; Roland Daugareil, violin.
