On April 17, 1964, the New York Mets played their first game in the brand-new Shea Stadium in Queens, New York. 50,000 fans came out to see the new stadium and the Mets, who would go on to lose 109 games that season. Shea Stadium was demolished in 2008 and the Mets debuted their new stadium, Citi Field, on April 13, 2009.

On this day in 1971, the United States table tennis team began an historic trip to the People's Republic of China, and set in motion what would later be called "ping pong diplomacy." The US and China severed all diplomatic relations in 1949, and the communist government's invitation to the American athletes in 1971 was China's attempt to restore relations with the US. This would pave the way for President Nixon's well-publicized trip to China in 1972.
