The Alexander Street 50-State Giveaway: American History in Video

We're giving away 50 subscriptions to American History in Video—one in every state! This is in part our response to the economic downturn—a way to support libraries facing budget cuts. It's also a way for us to learn more, because—and here's the bonus—for the year of this free subscription, we will work with the 50 libraries in a true collaboration to build patron awareness. Together, we'll gather solid, actionable knowledge about what works when libraries and publishers work together to drive usage.

Apply now through the 4th of July for a free, one-year subscription to American History in Video.

History and New Media: Kitty Sklar and Tom Dublin

WASM-lores One of our most popular online collections is Women and Social Movements in the U.S., created in partnership with editors Kathryn Kish Sklar and Thomas Dublin of SUNY Binghampton. Already known and respected for their print work, Sklar and Dublin ventured into cyberspace in 1997, posting their first document project on a public Web site in December of that year.

A new article by Sklar and Dublin discussing their transition to the Web, their partnership with Alexander Street, and the advances of scholarship through new media is available on the American Historical Association Web site.

"Keeping up with the Web, 1997-2008: Women and Social Movements in the United States" appears in the May 2009 issue of Perspectives on History.

Women and Social Movements now contains over 80 document projects created by Sklar, Dublin, and other scholars. Freely browse Women and Social Movements, or contact sales@alexanderstreet.com for a free trial or a price quote.

The Romantic Era Redefined is live!

ROMR cover Through a partnership with London-based publisher Pickering & Chatto, students and scholars have access to important primary texts for the study of Romantic-era literature and social history—with more than 87,000 pages of Pickering & Chatto's esteemed critical editions. The collection also includes additional content from other publishers, archives, the leading Romanticism journal, The Wordsworth Circle, and other sources never-before-available online. Besides the literature—poetry, novels, short fiction, and drama—there are letters, diaries, conduct literature, speeches, travel narratives, political writings, philosophical works, theological and sociological writings, and more. Featuring work from writers in Britain, the British Empire, and North America, the collection is particularly strong in its coverage of the Romantic Era's "second generation," which spans the years from 1800 to 1830. The Romantic Era Redefined brings something distinctly new to academic study, with access to overlooked and inaccessible important works.

On this day in 1773, British Parliament made another attempt to impose its authority over the American colonies by passing the Tea Act. The Tea Act only added fuel to the fire, as American patriots organized the Boston Tea Party later that year.
